Another of this month’s most popular films is Vindication Swim. This is a remarkable and true story of Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 became the first British woman to swim the English Channel. It shows her struggle to overcome the cold Channel waters and the oppressive society of 1920s Britain, and how she had to repeat the swim after a rival came forward claiming to have accomplished the same feat.
Vindication Swim is being screened in October at Churchinford, Calne and Halstock.Yetminster, South Petherton (David Hall), Membury (Devon), Charlton Marshall, Kilmington Community Centre (Devon), Nether Wallop, Shepton Montague, Chard (Guildhall), Cattistock, Hythe (Parish Hall), Whitchurch, Cheddon & West Monkton and Royal Wootton Bassett (RWB Academy).
There are a few more chances to see the funny period piece Wicked Little Letters, starring Olivia Colman as the uptight and bullied neighbour of foul-mouthed but warm-hearted Jessie Buckley. It’s a good film, maybe not great, but the two stars are brilliant and it’s interesting to see the much-loved Timothy Spall in a nasty role.
Catch it in our region at Winsford, Sixpenny Handley, Somerton (public hall), Westbury-sub-Mendip and Netherbury.
Wilding, the documentary about Isabella Tree and her husband and their successful rewinding of the Knepp Estate in Sussex, is at Donhead St Mary, Watchet (cinema), Wookey Hole, South Petherton (David Hall), East Knoyle and Ringwood (Greyfriars, at 2.30 and 7.30).
