THE November choice from Moviola is dominated by the film Vindication Swim, based on a true story. There are also a number of screenings of the rockumentary Swede Caroline, filmed in Somerset, and of the documentary Wilding, inspired by Isabella Tree’s story of how she and her husband saved his family estate by turning to rewinding, and in the process kick-started the whole rewinding revolution.
Vindication Swim is a 2024 biographical drama about swimmer Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 became the first British woman to swim the English Channel. It shows Gleitze’s struggle to overcome both the cold waters of the English Channel and the oppressive society of 1920s Britain. However, after a rival comes forward claiming to have accomplished the same feat, Mercedes is forced back into the water to retain her record and her legacy. Written and directed by Elliott Hasler, it stars Kirsten Callaghan as Mercedes with John Locke as her coach and Victoria Summer as her rival.
