It also lends itself to endless, inventive reimagining, and they don’t come funnier or more original than Pride and Prejudice (*sort of), which comes to Poole’s Lighthouse arts centre from Monday 18th to Saturday 23rd November.

If you have already seen this Olivier and Evening Standard Theatre award-winning hit show, you will know how hilarious it is – if you haven’t, don’t miss it, because you are in for a treat.

Written by Isobel McArthur, who also directs this new production, it is an audacious retelling of this classic love story in which men, money and microphones are fought over in an irreverent but affectionate adaptation, where the stakes couldn’t be higher when it comes to romance.

The show features a string of pop classics including Young Hearts Run Free, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and You’re So Vain. It’s the 1800s. It’s party time. Let the ruthless matchmaking begin.

The cast includes Susie Barrett whose previous credits include The Ballad of Maria Marten UK tour, Lost and Found at the Factory International as Anne, Mary Bennet, Lydia Bennet and Mr Gardiner; Emma Rose Creaner (Peter Pan at the Gate Theatre, Dublin and Tartuffe at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin) as Tillie, Charlotte Lucas, Charles Bingley and Miss Bingley; Rhianna McGreevy (The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s Globe) as Flo, Mrs Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy; Naomi Preston Low (Further Than the Furthest Thing at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall, and The Wind and The Rain at the Finborough Theatre) as Effie and Elizabeth Bennet; and Christine Steel (A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Scottish National Orchestra) as Clara, Jane Bennet, and Lady Catherine de Burgh. Also joining the company are Isobel Donkin, Georgia May Firth, and Harriet Sanderson.
