Maxine Peake and Ben Daniels star in Doubt

ONE of the finest British actresses of her generation, Maxine Peake comes to Bath Theatre Royal’s Ustinov Studio in a production of the powerful drama Doubt. Ben Daniels, an Olivier Award-winning actor and well-known from many television roles, co-stars in the production, which runs from 7th February to 8th March.

Doubt, A Parable, by John Patrick Stanley, was adapted as a film starring Meryl Streep and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

It is set at a Catholic school in the Bronx, New York, in 1964. Sister Aloysius, the strong-minded Principal has suspicions that one of her teaching fathers is abusing a vulnerable pupil. Without proof, she is forced to take matters into her own hands. As the elements of her investigation come together, the gripping story poses fascinating questions of moral certainty…

Both the play and film have had huge critical acclaim – “A drama of surefire brilliance” said The Guardian; “Breathtaking – Doubt follows you home from the theatre and ventures into unsettling corners” said Time Out; and the Telegraph called it: “One of the great plays about moral certainty and subjective truth.”

Maxine Peake shot to fame in Victoria Wood’s Dinner Ladies and has appeared in some of the most popular TV series of the last 20 years including Channel 4’s Shameless, Silk, The Village, The Hollow Crown, Inside No 9 and Black Mirror on the BBC, as well as portraying the notorious Myra Hindley in ITV’s See No Evil.

Award-winning stage actor Ben Daniels is a veteran of television, film and theatre. His television credits include The Rings of Power, Interview with the Vampire, Foundation, The Crown, The Exorcist and House of Cards and he has appeared in numerous productions for the National Theatre and on Broadway.

The cast also includes Rachel John and Holly Godliman. Rachel John’s West End credits include Songs For A New World, Girl From The North Country, Hamilton, The Bodyguard, Memphis, Rent and We Will Rock You. Newcomer Holly Godliman made her feature film debut in Keira Knightley’s The Woman in Cabin 10.

Director Lindsay Posner, one of the UK’s most sought after directors, returns to Bath fresh from the West End transfers of Noises Off, A View From The Bridge and The Deep Blue Sea.
