Shaken, stirred and helpless with laughter

IT may be some years before Bond fans get another film to enjoy, but at Cirencester’s adventurous Barn Theatre, you can enjoy the challenges of casting the world’s most famous spy.

As Jordan Walter, writer of A Role to Die For, puts it, “It’s no laughing matter.”

But that’s what audiences are doing as the play, starring Janie Dee as casting agent Deborah, unfolds with ever more hilarious scenes. Fans at the gala night fell over themselves to praise the actors – particularly Janie Dee – and the script.

Deborah is responsible for casting the most famous role in Hollywood but the actor she chooses suddenly withdraws the day before the announcement. As the film starts shooting straight away, time is short to find a replacement. Her cousin wants to sell out, her son insists on going woke, and all she yearns for is the warm glow of Sean Connery’s unbeatable charm.

This very funny comedy full of secret agents, secret agreements and secret family feuds, is directed by 2024 Olivier Award winning Derek Bond, and runs to 15th March.

The cast also includes Philip Bretherton, Harry Goodson-Bevan, Kit Esuruoso and Peter McPherson.
